ABOUT FEMME ROCK
How it works.
Femme Rock is a music school in Austin, Texas, where womxn (cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary) ages 21+ can learn how to play instruments in a band on stage.
Band classes meet for an hour and a half once a week, for six weeks. We’ll go over the structure of the songs, provide you with resources to learn each part, then teach you how to put it all together with your fellow band mates. The learning environment is highly inclusive, supportive, and empowering; think of us as a support group for female musicians. At the end of six weeks, you'll know how to play three songs with your band and perform them live on stage.
Band classes are best for intermediate and advanced students who have taken lessons previously. Total beginners are welcome, but it's advised that they take private lessons outside of class, or before the session starts.
"Being in the spotlight is both exhilarating and terrifying. But what always keeps me going and coming back for more is the feeling I get as soon as I open my mouth… the feeling of being completely in the zone. Everything else melts away, and I let myself experience the pure bliss of being totally and unapologetically me."
MEET THE FOUNDER
Reece Herrera is a self-taught musician who has has been playing drums for 25+ years. She had her first encounter with drums at the age of 7 when she discovered that pots and pans from the kitchen made a "really cool sound." Shortly after all her parents' kitchenware was destroyed, Reece's dad decided it was time for her to have a big kid drum set.
Reece finds it rewarding and exciting to unlock her students' distinctive learning styles. Rather than focusing on counts and perfection, she teaches students to fully adapt to the flow and rhythm of the music. Reece creates unique lesson plans for each student, with a focus on ear training, to help students discover their own personal style.
